Ran across this video on YT, the demonstrator is discussing various canes and ways to fight using them. I thought it might make for some ideas in regards to Magic-users and Monks that may want to use canes or staves. The aspect of using the hook of a cane to grab or attempt to trip up an opponent seems applicable to combat.

Never really thought about a cane being a multi-use tool. Its the same concept with the sword in that the blade is not the only part of the weapon that can be of use.
WRT the applicability to magic-users and monks, it's up to the DM on how in-depth the game play will go with the cane's functionality. The magic-user is still going to be at a disadvantage with his to-hit table. The monk is only slightly better with the thieves table... but I house rule monks to use the cleric or fighter to-hit table since they are supposed to be martial artists.
