I hate to admit it but I never really questioned what inspired Tolkien's Dwarves and their penchant for underground living. By complete accident I may have discovered a real world impetus in this article from the BBC about and underground city of 20,000 people in modern day Turkey. It seems it was continuously inhabited from around 350 BC to 1920! So I think it would definitely have been something that Tolkien would have known about. I now have another reason to visit Turkey!
