Yeah, that seems to be a mutual assessment from other GURPS players I've heard from, similar to HarnMaster.

Here's a good explainer video about different aspects of the GURPS system.

Nice. I still think the system would be fun to play with a GM who speaks fluent GURPS. Not sure I have the time to devote to learning the ins and outs to make it work properly.

Agreed. I know Jared is a fan of GURPS. Maybe we can convince him to run a demo session with pre-gens for us one of these years...

An interesting argument against D&D (and similar d20 games).

Whew! That was a lot of continual chatter to say he finds D&D "a game about nothing" and that he can't buy in to it. I did like the note of 44 playable character races now available which is ludicrous. Many players struggle consider and RP dwarves and elves, much less githyanki and other assorted "out there" races.

By introducing more 'choices' each defined playable race and class is diluted. The fact of the matter is that you could always play any race and class combo you wanted as long as you worked it out with the GM. There's more I could say on the matter, but I think I'd be preaching to the choir. So I'll just say that I like less rules and more imagination.

I've played in a few HM5 sessions at conventions (Origins, GenCon, GaryCon) over the years and even demoed HMBasic back in the middle GA days. I'd consider playing in a HM5 game if I thought the GM would do it justice but would not want to run one.

Emphasis mine.
I've been thumbing through HMBasic off-and-on over the last few months so I'm going to amend what I emphasized. I could see trying my hand at running the Basic version.

Speaking of alternatives to D&D, I just saw earlier this week that WotC has announced that in 2024, there will be a new edition/not-edition of D&D. Basically, as with 3.0 and 3.5, and 4.0 and 4.5, WotC is now planning a 5.5 that is supposed to be fully backward compatible.

Three new core books are planned...but it's not a new "edition" of D&D... according to WotC.

What better alternative to D&D than D&D, that's not D&D, but still D&D. Hehe.

I also read that there will be a new book of monsters coming out that will have 30 playable races. 30. If there was ever an indication that D&D has gone off the rails, I think this qualifies. When you have 30 playable monster races, then it stops being about dungeon delving, killing monsters and taking their stuff, and becomes something else.

Aaaaaaaand WotC shows again that history repeats itself.

I'm going to call it now: 5.5 or whatever it gets called will be backwards compatible mechanically but will be absolutely sandblasted to meet the PC crowd's demands. It already started with things like the Ravenloft products having "gypsies" removed for the Vistani culture.
