FYI. Runequest doesn't have XP or levels.

How is skill advancement determined? Is it arbitrary by the GM saying something like "OK time to advence!" There has to be something in place that determines when skills can advance. Right?

I'm interested in the advancement procedure too. Otherwise it sounds like a fun time. I don't tend to lean towards the magic heavy systems either, but I have played in several that were quite fun.

Skill advancement happens between sessions. If your character successfully made a skill check during the course of the session, you put a check mark next to the skill on the character sheet. After the session is over, you then roll a skill check. If you fail, you get to add 1-6 points to that skill. Therefore, the higher the skill, the harder it is to increase it. For example, my warrior was able to increase his broadsword skill to 105. It has become very difficult for me to advance his broadsword skill any further. Regardless of that, if I roll a 95 to 100, that is a automatic failure. I have to roll that to increase my broadsword skill. The lower your skill, the easier it is to advance IF you make a successful roll. My tracking skill sucks but I did get lucky and make a successful skill check at it and I was easily able to add 4 more points to it at the end of the session.
Also, your stats can change. My character's strength has increased by 3 points since we started. My Power stat started at 16, went to 15, back up to 18 and it is currently 17.
