Northward

The mysterious note to Dead Hobbit Run is calling our friend, and it appears that with no other pressing needs we are headed North! In preparation for our journey I purchased a new pair of boots with a hidden blade from the Outfitters Store. While there I recognized a known face. The elf named Sarkazian from the unknown woman's journal in Mont du Plane. The fact that he is here is disturbing. I can think of no good reason he would be here, and I do not believe in coincidence, not anymore. If Bruno can determine where he is staying perhaps I can leave him an anonymous note to that will lead him away from us.

Bruno was able to determine where he was staying, but before I could leave a note in his room he appeared downstairs with his belongings looking to settle his bill and leave. I quickly took my prepared note, which said "To open the tomb, you must sacrifice a lamb upon the alter." and headed outside. I hid my hat, dirtied my face, and quickly sprinted to the stable. I flagged down a stable boy and asked if he knew of an elf, not a ranger, who fit Sarkazian's description. He said it he did. I claimed I had a letter for him and left it with the stable boy to deliver. I quickly left, returned to the rear of the 3 crowns to clean up and went back inside. Hopefully we won't see him again in the future.

We spent the remainder of the day buying supplies for our journey. I believe we will head out in the morning. I will use the downtime to continue practicing my abilities. I believe I'm on the cusp of a new spell to help with locks.

The following day we departed Bronzehall and arrived in Wingston. Where we learned the Elf, Sarkazian, had passed through the day before. I guess it was too much to hope that he would take the bait I left in the note. The following day we're flagged down outside of Aysgarth and told of a pox affecting the town by human child, maybe 12 years. He also mentioned that "an Elf, named Treyvor, he looks like a serious adventurer" was going to save the town. I wished to avoid the town and leave it to "Treyvor", but Pardue was adamant that we confirm the village was not under some sort of threat. The party decided to check things out in the village the next morning.

We entered the village and asked about procuring a wagon wheel. We were directed to inquire with Old Harold on the northern outskirts. Pardue took the lead and got fleeced for 13GP while bargaining for the wheel. He's not allowed to do this stuff again. While this was going on we were able to determine that whatever sickness was affecting this village wasn't the Charnalite Plague and it was clear folks were recovering. The Elf approached us whilst we loading our new wheel and engaged in some conversation. He claimed that he was going to a monastery near Bracklewhyte when he got side tracked in Aysgarth. He also claimed the illness was caused by a local graverobber who contracted something and brought it back to town. Pardue had done some divine magic and indicated that the story matched with his observations. At least as far as I could gather from Pardue. As it was a local matter and Pardue was satisfied I indicated that it was time to depart.

The remainder of our travel to Fortitude was uneventful. I was able to practice my cooking and engage in teaching Thip and Echa some rudimentary reading and writing. It's early, but I'm hopeful they will be able to master the skill before the year is out. Perhaps I should ask the other's if there are any skills they would like pass on to the siblings. My personal studies continue.

Fortitude and Bracklewhyte

Duccio - Village Elder of Bracklewhyte

We arrived in Fortitude and took residence at the local temple. Honestly I am tired and glad to be out of the rain that started mid-day. I think I will sit and rest here tonight. I'm so tired I don't even want to eat...

I awakened this morning somewhere North of Fortitude. I'm aware of everything that happened last night. A general malaise seemed to affect all the humans of our party except for Pardue who was unaffected and Iolo who was manic. Bruno led the party North during the night after seeing that all the residents of the town were similarly affected. While the party helped Thip and Echa into the wagon they left Valdork to DRAG me through the muck and throw me in the wagon. This is beyond the pale. So I made sure to get even this morning once I regained my senses. A quick sleep spell put the dwarf on the ground. I quickly disarmed him and spent a minute dragging his heavy carcass around. I made sure to pull him through a pile of horse shit to drive my point home. When he came to I promptly set on him and explained myself. Understandably he struck me. I told him that was fair and asked if he was done. He said he was if I got off him. I did. He then told me not to expect any help in the future. I never expected help from the Dwarf, but I informed him that I can do a lot worse in the future if need be. I then stated that we should go back and help the people of Fortitude. I want to know what was affecting me and kill it. Pardue wanted to go back and help, but the rest of the party demurred. So for now my investigations must wait. We continue North to Bracklewhyte.

We made progress and have set up camp. I'm not cooking tonight as I don't feel like it. Only Pardue deserves my cooking right now. My watch and the night passed without incident.

This morning after travelling a mile, Valdork caught site of a large amount of Orc tracks. According to him it's at least a hundred of the pig like creatures. They must have noticed our camp last night. Why they didn't attack is beyond me. Perhaps they are running from something worse. Regardless, I'm actually glad the Dwarf is here at the moment. I might have to stop referring to him as Valdork... For now we continue Northward. We've made camp again. I am willing to cook again, but with the orcs in the area a fire is out of the question. So it will be hard tack tonight.

My watch and the night were boring. Today we should see Bracklewhyte.

We've arrived to closed gates and a single watchman. The palisade looks well maintained and the watchman seems okay. I think we'll be okay to enter. The watchman pointed us towards the Inn. We were able to stable the Animals and and Wagon for a reasonable fee (12 sp). We then set off to find the Village Elder. He informed us that a treaty between the orc tribes and the dwarves had been signed, and that it has held for 6 months. I stated that Orcs don't sign treaties, but apparently they do. I'm now convinced they are fleeing from something that scares them, and they are using the treaty to re-locate. Though Duccio claims the tribes haven't moved. He said he was also aware of the problems in Fortitude, but that it was out of his purview and he didn't have the men-at-arms to spare to investigate. For now it appears the denizens of Fortitude will be on their own.

We learned from the tavern keeper of Ye Olde Cabbage of the freeholds between here and Teglis keep. We updated our map accordingly. We also heard that there had been no traffic from the North and the fortnightly rider from Teglis Keep was 3 days late. No one seems to be bothered by this, but I'm concerned.

Ascanio, Krytos

Tarin & Meers Krytos - Owners of the Freehold

The following morning we left early to make Ascanio Freehold by dark. About an hour north we crossed a path of white roses that led to the Northwest. Iolo mentioned "the Elf" had told them that it led to a monastery dedicated to white roses somewhere near by. It was clear "The Elf" had already passed through the area. We decided to head North. We arrived at the freehold shortly before dusk. The fortifications were wooden, but double layered. We could count at least 5 buildings from the outside. I was able to check the stories regarding the Orcs. Curiously here they say Orcs have been moving Everywhere but Eastward. They also stated that a runner from Krytos had informed them that all the patrols from Pitmerden had been pulled back to the city to deal with a disastrous fire. We departed the next day for Krytos Freehold.

About half way to Krytos we were able to spot a tent city in the distance off to the East. There was a lot of activity and it was clear they were not hiding. We were about 4 miles away and it looked to be about 15 rough tents. We estimated about 100 people. What banners we could see were to far away to make out. We decided to move on our way as it was none of our business and weren't in need of any trade. As dusk was nearing we approached Krytos. The buildings were made of stone, the palisade of wood, though it was anchored by a watchtower. The amount of work clearly showed a defensible hill fort. The Apple orchard was clearly apparent. Once again we were welcomed inside with no fuss. It's nice not to be interrogated everywhere we go. We were greeted by an older gentlemen with a weather worn face, but who moved with the training of a solider. He stated his name was Tarin Krytos, the owner of the freehold. He also revealed his wife was a lover of languages and books. I was invited to dinner after a visit to the guesthouse for bathing.

The manor house dinning hall was large and well appointed. It's clear by the furnishings and the popularity of his cider that Tarin is doing quite well. Tarin revealed he is a veteran of the Volcrad Army, the Gatlin Mountains are all part of the Volcrad County that Lord Gatlin is in charge of. He claimed that Pitmerdan had been devastated by a fire and that thousands were dead. The granaries had been destroyed, and starvation for many was likely, but the surrounding cities were able help make up the food shortfalls.

It turns out Tarin's wife Meers is also versed in cooking, herbalism, and spellcraft. I spent the evening discussing the finer points of magic with her. She also revealed the armies of Volcrad do not have battlemages, but often employ locals to fill that role when needed. She turned out be very open and was willing to discuss many of the finer points of offensive magics. We spent the entire night discussing magic in all forms. When the birds began singing we realized that dawn was approaching and that our talk must end. She bid me visit again in the future.

As I stumbled into the guest bedroom that I was sharing with Bruno, he was just getting up for the morning meal. He informed me that Tarin had offered us a job for the following month. For joining his watch for 30 days he would pay 150 GP with a 50 GP bonus at the end, room and board included. This would also allow me to spend more time with Meers and her laboratory! I quickly signaled my assent to such a deal and passed out in bed.

The party was amenable to the deal. We quickly fell into the watch schedule, and Meers had given me open access to her laboratory! The gods bless this woman! After the first day of watch I was able to get the lay of the land and see what Tarin had to work with if an actual attack came. I noticed he had no defensive siege engines. So I offered to make him some if he covered the cost of materials, provided the labor, and kicked in an extra 50 GP to me at the end of the contract. This is a steal of a deal in my opinion and Tarin seems to agree. It turns out he has more than enough materials and labor available for me to build a couple of scorpios, an onager, and a mangonel. I figure it'll take a little under 3 weeks to complete it all.

Day 5 of our contract at Krytos I asked Tarin how many people here actually knew how to fight? He revealed it was only himself and Meers. I suggested he approach Pardue to provide some basic training to his subordinates. I speculated Valdork might be useful as well, but I'll leave it to them to negotiate their own deals. I've noticed that Bruno has already started teaching a few people how to use a sling properly.

On day 6 Tarin was ambushed by Orcs of the Bloodrune tribe. We were able to provide covering fire from the first scorpio. Tarin was wounded and several of his retainers were killed, but we managed to get him back inside the freehold. Tarin revealed the Bloodrune tribe had sworn a vendetta against him and he figured they were here for revenge. I inquired about the clan a bit more, but Tarin's answers were all supposition. I decided I should focus my efforts on getting the next Scorpio completed and excused myself to do exactly that.

That evening a lone orc approached the gates and delivered an ultimatum from a Captain Helir. Basically a surrender and die. These people really need to learn that you can't open negotiations like that. When you give people nowhere to go they will fight. I am no different.
It appears neither is Tarin or Bruno. For I saw Bruno hit the Orc with a sling bullet. Pardue followed up and gave the Orc another parting shot as he retreated out of range. We shall see how things develop.

Siege of Krytos

Asny Krytos - Daughter of Tarin Krytos

I spent hours late into the night completing the next scorpio. When it was finished I noticed the gates were being opened. We were under strict orders that the gate should not opened. I quickly cast a sleep spell to stop the opening of the gate and rand forward to see what was going on. Bruno beat me to the gate and revealed there was a woman pinned beneath a horse outside. Apparently she is someone of importance because they began opening the gate again. I steadied myself for a possible ambush assault, but nothing happened. Once I saw the gate was closed and secured I left for bed.

In the morning it was revealed the orcs had been busy building siege ladders and a catapult. Good news for us is that our scorpios will out range them by a large margin. I was also told that an Ogre was also spotted last night. I figure this Ogre has managed to cow the Orcs into working for him. This attack on the freehold may be meant to solidify his position. I postulate that removing the Ogre early may end the siege quickly. Bruno also suggested that since Orcs dislike sunlight that burning there tents and exposing them all day long would lead to tired and grumpy orcs tonight, when the battle will likely occur.

In an effort to facilitate Bruno's plan of action I devised a raid of horsemen to sally forth. The 3 most capable riders, Tarin; Asny(his daughter), and Bruno will split from the main party in an attempt to penetrate the lines and burn the tents and siege devices. The remainder would focus on firing a few volleys of arrows to keep the Orcs distracted. We will also drop a few smoke devices (pitch covered logs) to help cover the retreat. If any Orcs pursue through the smoke we have the scorpions. During the preparations Treyvor the elf arrived, big surprise... Apparently he can ride and shoot a bow well, so that will give us 4 riders for the true intent of the raid.

As the raiders departed a war horn was sounded from the Orc camp as expected. Our brave riders advanced and exchanged bow fire with the day-blind orcs. The arsonist teams were able to split off and spread the accelerant around the camp. The arrow exchanges appeared to be heavily in our favor and suddenly a large explosion occurred in their main campfire which spread flaming embers all around. As the raiders retreated they left 2 freemen and horses behind. Several were injured as well as four more horses. By the time the survivors were back inside the gates it was clear the orcs were abandoning their burning camp. The catapult was destroyed as well as several siege ladders and tents. At least 7 orc bowmen were also confirmed dead. All in all I would call the raid an astounding success!

I was able to see some disagreement between Tarin and Bruno with Treyvor. I learned later that Treyvor had deviated from the plan at the last moment. He was responsible for the explosion, so it paid off, but it was a risk that was taken with no communication beforehand. For now though the orc camp is broken, and Tarin has announced a feast for tonight.

We toasted our heroes of the day and mourned our losses at the feast. Pardue said a lovely prayer. Shortly after we got reports of movement in the darkness. Tarin feared the orcs had returned to set the orchards ablaze in an attempt to lure the freeholders out for an ambush. We readied the horses and manned the scorpions. Bruno and Valdrok kept an astute watch through the night. The movement disappeared and I went to bed. I was awoken some hours late by the alarm bell. By the time I got outside I saw everyone around the gate. I was informed that Asny had left in the company of Treyvor! I immediately berated the watch captain Romana for letting that happened and screamed for the immediate formation of a rescue party. I told Tarin the two riders were in range of the scorpio when he arrived. He took a quick moment to decide and ordered a shot be taken. Pardue quickly blessed Bruno who was taking the shot due to his better eyesight. Unfortunately he was unable to land a hit. As they rode beyond maximum range. As Tarin rode forth after them I wished him luck. I know retrieving his daughter will be a daunting task as I am convinced she is under a charm spell.

Siege of Krytos Continued

The morning came quickly and we were aware that we may still be under watch from Orcs. We came up with a plan to sweep the orchards of the archery blinds. Pardue and Valdrok would take the lead this time while I coordinated communication and covering fire with the scorpions. It took quite some time, but we were able to determine that all the blinds that had been built were empty. Some traps had also been left behind, but thankfully we only had one casualty, which Pardue quickly took care of. Valdrok destroyed the blinds and relocated all the traps we found to the approaches for our own use should the Orcs return. As the day wound down Tarin returned without his daughter and some injured riders. He informed us that he had managed to evade the Orcs in the field, but that 'the elf' had eluded him. He proposed to pay out our contract immediately if we agreed to take on another contract to track down the elf and rescue his daughter. He would prefer we bring 'the elf' in alive, but it wasn't a requirement. After a quick party vote we opted to take up the new offer. We agreed we would leave out in the morning to pick up the trail though we still need to finalize the details of the bounty.

Elf Hunt

We agreed to hunt down the elf who has kidnapped Asny for Tarin. If we succeed Tarin has vowed to present us with a letter of introduction to the Duke in Pitmerden. Tarin agreed to loan us an extra horse each to speed our pursuit. We've left the wagon and our retainers behind in an effort to catch up with duo. We spent the remainder of the evening packing fresh provisions and getting some rest.

We left early in the morning heading directly for where Tarin had to abandon the trail. We were able to pick it up easily and Valdrok managed to follow it with ease at first. He lost the trail twice, but was able to find again after a short search both times. As the day came to a close we discovered our quarries campsite from the previous night. It was clear they had ridden through the night to reach this place. The fact that neither the horses nor Asny had suffered an accident riding in darkness proves this bastard has the luck of a leprechaun. We opted to use their campsite as we had already confirmed their trail was continuing toward Old Teglis. I suspect it will intersect with the old road in the morning. I made certain that everyone had fresh food before heading to bed. Cold weather moved in as I slept and I awoke to a very cold morning. I sat third watch and studied my books. For now the sun is rising and it's time to serve a quick breakfast and begin pursuit.

As I expected the trail merged with the road and is headed South towards Old Teglis. The weather is concerning and Valdrok has noted that the ground is cold. The temperature has not increased at all since we awoke. Bruno recalled hearing rumors from a travelling group in Heartcross about strange cold weather to the North. That could match our current location. According to what Bruno remembers when the group turned away from the cold it began to get warmer. I am beginning to suspect powerful dark forces. I hope there are no Takkeronian relics or runes ahead of us, but I will be watching out for such things.

As we approached Old Teglis I was able to see several cook fires. Old Teglis is supposed to be abandoned. We observed a Church of the Old Path off to the West. We opted to investigate it first as the elf is known to gravitate toward such places and if nothing is out of place Pardue may be able to speak with the local priest. As we got closer it was clear that the building had fallen into ruin despite the active cook fire. I also spotted a large curved spike rising form the ground in front of the entrance. It was very reminiscent of the temple to Ka-Sik-Fal beneath Mont du Plain, but the temple itself looked to be dedicated to Shuantea. We diverted to the back of the building where we spotted what looked like a body lying on the ground. Valdrok inspected it more closely, and from his report it appeared the poor bastard was a victim of a flash freeze. The conditions are similar to a chill touch spell I have read about but over a much larger area and orders of magnitude more powerful.

We decided to check the roads exiting Old Teglis to see if the elf and Asny had left. While we saw tracks heading into Old Teglis we have found no tracks exiting the town. The only building large enough to house horses is the temple. It appears our quarry is nearby. We decided to finish our circuit of the village and saw 2 horses being butchered by two women in black robes. We decided to stash our horses and approach the butchers. They immediately panicked at our approach and summoned whole village, which turned out to be 14 women. We retreated outside of the village and attempted some quick diplomacy that went nowhere. Two of the women began running for the temple. We retreated to our horses and Bruno was able to easily cut off the running women. As we all caught up the two women killed themselves with their knives! A quick search turned up a pendant of Ka-Sik-Fal on one while the other had ritual engravings of Ka-Sik-Fal.

Valgard was able to discern drag marks of two bodies going into the temple. For now our task seems clear, and our goal lies beneath the rotten timbers of Shauntea's former temple. Pardue led the way and noted that the horn emanated an aura of intense evil. As we got closer, Bruno stopped and listened closely at the dilapadated door. He overheard a conversation between two men regarding Asny. Apparently they were wondering when Bi-shil-ba would allow them to violate the young woman.

I took the opportunity to use my magics to put the two goons into a deep slumber. After which we proceeded inside. We immediately observed a desecrated image of Shauntea. A collection of tentacles and horns that leave no question of the vileness and evil of these people. We quickly discovered the two men I had put to sleep and dispatched them. Pardue then muttered a prayer to the Old Gods for us as we descended the stairs we found there. Below we observed 3 men sitting at a table clearly enjoying what sounded like a torture session. Bruno seemed to fade into the darkness as Valdrok drew his bow and Pardue charged.

The scene quickly devloved into chaos as battle ensued. My companions acquitted themselves well and the three fell quickly. Chanting could be heard coming from an adjacent room. Valdrok quickly opened the door and ran in to continue the attack. Pardue followed and I quickly ran to the door to observe the situation. Inside were 3 more adversaries. I quickly advised my compatriots to fallback as I prepared a color spray. Unfortunately my spell went off before they were able to retreat, but it was successful in disabling two of our opponents outright, while the other remained blind. Valdrok and Pardue were also down, but Bruno and I continued to fire sling stones at the blind fighter. When he recovered he attacked Valdrok and then rushed me. The next thing I remember is waking up to Pardue looking down upon me and a great pain in my chest. Our enemies were dead, but that is far closer to death than I ever want to be again.

Asny and two other women were discovered nearby. She is still clearly under the affect of a charm spell from 'the elf.' I took the opportunity to kill the bastard as his living return is optional. He had a large amulet embedded in his chest that was of a similar design to the one we used to destroy the Charnalite ring. A closer inspection of his body revealed his wounds healing in order of the time of affliction. I suspect it might even resurrect him given time. This could be very problematic, so I've proposed making sure we disable his hands, eyes, and mouth to make sure he cannot cast spells should that happen. The rest of the day was spent organizing ourselves, looking for loot, and determining what to do with this evil place.

Old Teglis

We got some information from Asny. She claims to be in love with Treyvor. He has apparently told her that he is a ward of the King. We have found no evidence to corroborate that. There are two other women here who have clearly been abused. They claim to have been taken from a merchant caravan these bastards waylaid on the road. We discovered a cache that contained all the possessions of the captives. Among Treyvor's items are a suit of fine leather armor, long sword, short sword, dagger, and a short bow. All of fine craftsmanship. Four nicely bound traveling journals, a spell book were, and a nice looking lute were also found.

We quickly found Asny's longbow, long sword, and short sword. Her leather armor was also present. There was also a coin pouch among her stuff with 3 P, 10 G, 3 S, 7 C coins. Among the brigands we found 2 sets of human chainmail, 6 sets of human leather, 2 sets of human robes. 1 hammer, 2 daggers, and 5 longswords were also found. The two casters also had a spell book and ingredient pouch each. I suggested my companions search the locale for any concealed locations. These brigands have been hijacking caravans there must me more supplies somewhere.

The daylight was fading so I opted to take the captives, and Treyvor's body to a campsite outside Old Teglis and start making a proper meal.. Iolo (who seemed to appear from nowhere) joined me in this endeavor. Meanwhile the rest of the party opted to investigate the village.

Bruno was able to find one hut with another journal, a clearly evil book of Kal-Sik-Fal, and an idol. He brought the two books back to camp and left the idol. The journal described the origin of this cult, and it reminded us of the party from Heartcross that had crossed the mountains and lost most of their number. The journal detailed how the founder of the cult had been having dreams and was compelled by them to write the other book Bruno found. The journal also made reference to a junk pile where the cult had dumped all the items they couldn't use or were forbidden to them that they robbed off of passing travelers.

The next day we took the time to put the entire village of Old Teglis and the desecrated temple to the torch in a hope to remove the taint of kal-sik-fal from the land. Since the giant horn had disappeared into the ground the weather had been reverting to normal. Overnight my speculations regarding the half-elf were proven true. He had revived multiple times. His restraints meant that he had been suffocating and dying again after each revival. It couldn't happen to a better person. Still I can't have a corpse coming back to life constantly, and the amulet only heals wounds in the order they are received. So I must only continue to deliver fatal wounds to the body to keep it dead.

I convinced the party to make an attempt to locate the cult's trash pit as it must have some good supplies in it based on everything we didn't find inside Old Teglis. They had been robbing caravans and travelers, yet not a single coin was found. It's out there somewhere, but we need to return to Krytos with our rescues. Once we are their I'll be able to dig into these books.

The return journey was un-eventful except for the fact that I know some Takkeronian bullshit is going on. That damn amulet is making it harder and harder for me to continue keeping this guy dead. Still we arrived safely and I've informed Tarin and Meers as to what we are dealing with. After seeing the amulet on the body I was able to see the Takkeronian script which name the amulet as the "Amulet of the Envoy." The half-elfs own journals confirm it. He also claims to be a ward of the king in them but there is no supporting evidence for that. His journals describe tales of a spoiled kid who chose adventuring as a lifestyle and knowingly put on that amulet despite not knowing the full consequences. Since then his personality has only become more heinous while the amulet causes a charm effect at a distance. His entries describe horror at his actions on one page, and the claim them as his due on the next. Regardless this is all the result of his stupidity at putting the damn thing on. I have no sympathy for him, and he deserves every death I have dealt him.

For now we are resting at the Krytos Freehold before continuing north. I'm happy to report that Asny's personality has returned to normal after being removed from the presence of the amulet for about a week. Though she still claims she was not under magical influence. I've taken the chance to go and inspect the amulet a few more times. I limit my exposure and keep a minimum of a day between visits to help keep my mind clear of it's effects. My efforts have met with some success. I was able to expand the hex language and engage the item in a conversation. Apparently this amulet was created by a Takkeronian Envoy named Orothix. It was created to persuade the hearts of the enemies of the empire, particularly those of Ka-Sik-Fal. The Amulet grants an undeniable charm, drawing people towards them and fostering trust and comradery. The power comes at a cost over time. The amulet erodes the moral compass of the bearer and they increasingly make choices that corrupt their own values. As loyalty and influence grow, so to does a fog of ethical deterioration. Ultimately risking the humanity of any who wear it. The negative effects came into existence with the fall of the empire. In my opinion it reeks of an old adage that absolute power begets absolute tyranny.

One intriguing note from the half-elf's journal is that the family of the dead woman we found in Mont du Plain that he raped apparently possesses a map that shows a pass through the mountains to the wastelands. The Duke in Pitmerden is offering 10,000 Platinum Pieces for just that information. I admit I'm tempted, but part of me is truly beginning to wonder if anyone should ever venture past those mountains.

Pitmerden

Elvivien - Takkeronian Sage in Pitmerden (seek him for advice regarding the amulet of the envoy)
Duke Gatlin of Pitmerden

Forge Master of the City of Fire - Vitrolier Firebrewer

We arrived to see the eastern half of the stronghold completely collapsed. As the city is an old pit mine and the road spirals around this means the remainder of the city is also cut off from normal transport. The area is a beehive of activity.. It is clear that the stories of all the Duke's forces being recalled are true. We saw ample evidence of it on the journey here, but to see everyone gathered in one spot gives me pause. Should another disaster befall Pitmereden in the near future everyone could be wiped out. Rumors abound that the destruction was wrought by dwarves though Valdrok denies such tales. Staring upon this scene I don't know what to believe, what I do know is that it took intimate knowledge of the terrain and free access to cause this kind of destruction.

Both gates along the main road have been destroyed, but the Southern and Northern gates are working. It took an hour to reach the North Gate, but once I revealed our possession of an introductory letter to the Duke we were quickly escorted inside. We left our supplies in the care of Fip and Echa while we wait for the Duke's time. The tales of the damage caused by the landside were not exaggerated and it was clear the damage was extensive.

We waited for quite some time before being informed the Duke wouldn't have time to meet with us that day. We were invited to stay at a local inn at the Duke's expense. The chance to relax and clean up after the road was welcome so we quickly accepted.
Overnight we expereinced a second landslide. We quickly jumped to help others, but again it was too little too late for far to many. I opted to use my engineering skills to help shore up unstable areas, while the others took on tasks more suitable to their experience.

Later that day we were able to meet with the Duke. He bade us welcome, set up a meeting with Elvivien, his advisor regarding all things Takkeronian. Elvivien was very knowledgeable and revealed much regarding Takkeronian artifacts. He believes that the creators of the artifacts imbued their own psyches into them, which is why they can adapt. He speculates they combine divine, arcane, and psychic magics. I did not reveal that I was carrying one, but I expressed my interest in finding out how to destroy the artifacts. It's clear to me that he knows I have one, but aside from requesting that we allow him to study it he did not make any demands. As I left he stated that the artifacts get more powerful over time as people prevent them from achieving their purpose. We I inquired as to their purpose his answer was simply; "To save the empire." Having only vague thoughts about how to destroy the artifacts we opted to approach the forge masters at the City of Fire.

The Amulet of the Envoy had recently broken it's iron casing and was becoming even more annoying. It had even started making others around it here screaming as if we were murdering someone in a very noisy manner. I created a new concrete encasing for it before we set off. Still it was vibrating and jumping around quite a bit.

At the City of Fire we were stopped at the gates by the Guards. Valdrok had revealed that the dwarves here were very reclusive, but their forge was powered by a gate that opened directly to the Plane of Fire. He also let us know that they despise Takkeronian artifacts. I revealed that we were on a quest to destroy one, and that allowed us an audience with the Forge Master. After much back and forth the Forge Master agreed to let us try to use his forge to destroy the damned thing. He made a request to the King to evacuate the city out of an abundance of caution, and he required that I be with him at the forge during the procedure. The night passed quickly if uncomfortably. I don't know how dwarves sleep on solid stone.

The next morning the evacuation proceeded quickly, and by midday only Vitrolier and I were left. He manipulated the forge through masterful tools and placed the concrete encased amulet in the fire. He unleashed the full power of the forge upon it. The concrete melted away into a blob and was pulled away. The amulet seemed unaffected. As a last resort Vitrolier opened the gate to the Plane of Fire and released the amulet into it. What seemed like a figure of fire formed around the amulet as it was pulled away hopefully to destruction. A wailing scream was all that we could hear as Vitrolier closed the gate and cooled the forge.

With our work done and nothing destroyed our uneasy welcome in the City of Fire was over. Vitrolier, however, did extend a invitation to return if we ever needed to destroy another artifact. For now we continue on our way to Dead Hobbit Run.

To Deadstone, Hammaslhati, and beyond

Urdot the Winterheart - A white dragon that lairs to southwest of Hammaslhati

The journey to Deadstone was quite uneventful. As Valdrok described the first sign of the city was a 45 foot statue of a dwarf made of metal. Supposedly it was mobile at one point, but is now nothing more than a decoration. As we approached a booming voice from the head of the statue bade us Welcome to Deadstone. As we approached the inn we observed the innkeeper throwing out another traveler. A human who had apparently been spouting anti-dwarf nonsense. I spotted a wheel wright as we entered town, and determined to inquire about a spare axel. I was able to acquire one for 10 GP and the party agreed to pay for it from party funds.

The following day we departed for Hammaslhati. The trip was fairly quiet, but an hour outside of town the sunlight was suddenly blocked from view. Upon looking up we spotted a White Dragon! Thankfully it didn't take an interest in us. Upon reaching the town, we found sturdy walls and about 2000 people. The majority of the inhabitants are human with some dwarves. The prosperity is low. Outside the walls seemed reserved for agriculture, though not much of it. The guard revealed the dragon was named Udrot the Winterheart. He said it might feed on the cow and oxen, but would leave us alone. The guard said he normally only comes out during late fall through the winter, and normally avoids people unless they happen to be inside a cart that he takes. He can be a problem during winter for caravans, but he normally allows people to flee or offer up animals. He also revealed that it lairs somewhere to the Southwest of Hammaslahti. He seemed very un-concerned regarding a giant raging ice lizard, but Bruno was definitely interested. Though he wanted to fill his belly first as normal. The Lethal Dwarf was recommended as a place to stay and eat.

Upon arriving we were informed by the tavern keeper that they don't server dwarf kind. Perhaps they should rename to place. I attempted to start a redirection scheme, but Valdrok directly interacted with the man spoiling my attempt. Probably for the best. Valdrok was able to inquire of some other dwarves where he could eat stay safely and we were directed to the Healthy Bison. Bruno re-affirmed with the dwarves that Winterheart's lair was to the southwest in the mountains. They also stated that he wouldn't attack us personally. They said the dwarves have always left him alone, and he leaves them alone. At the Healthy Bison we all took part in a delicious meal of ham. Bruno had been talking about it all day and we all wanted some. Amazingly he took a portion to the gate guard we met when entering. Apparently he is feeling generous today. Toward the end of the night the peace was disturbed by a rock thrown through the window of the inn. The watch was called, but it was clear they had no interest in pursuing the matter despite statements to the contrary.

Like many other groups with dwarven members we left early the next day, determined to continue our journey to Dead Hobbit Run. Rumors have reached us that there is a power there that can grant wishes. I don't know if it is an object or a person, but I'm certain that any wishes that may be granted are double edged swords. My semi-permanent sense of dread is beginning to re-assert itself. Please Boccob do not let it be another damned Takkeronian artifact. If it is please grant me the Wisdom of how to destroy it safely and quickly!

We seem to have picked up a cat. It sauntered out of the woods overnight while Bruno was on watch. It stayed through the night and curled up on me during my watch. The warmth extra warmth was nice, and it does have a fine coat of fur. I left it some food from the breakfast I prepared, but it didn't seem interested. Everyone else in the party seems to have taken to it, though Bruno has named it "Damn Cat."

We were waylaid by what I can only guess is an Ogre. To my horror and surprise, everyone except for Bruno and myself immediately charged the thing with no regard for their own safety. Even Echa and Fip! Thankfully I was able to take it down with quick sleep spell, and Valdrok quickly finished it. In a fit of anger I immediately dressed down Fip and Echa. They have no business engaging such a monster in hand-to-hand combat. when I asked what had gotten into them they claimed they were protecting DC (Damn Cat)! I instructed them to return to their duties. For now they are obeying if sullenly.

Some moments later....

And now Bruno and I are on the run from everyone else! Fip demanded that I tell him what my problem with DC is. Despite denying that I had any problem and pointing out that I had tried feeding him Fip attacked me while enraged. His actions were quickly followed by Valdrok, Pardue, Echa, and Iolo all turning hostile! Bruno and I managed to disengage without taking or causing injury. Clearly that cat is not a cat! Lord knows what will happen if they take that thing into a town. For now the two of us need to figure out a plan.

Dead Hobbit Run

While investigating the well we discovered the moss covering was supported by a webbing of sticks and was not natural. Valdrok decided to interrogate the Mistress of Shrubbery again. She claimed she didn't know how it got there, and that it was Biff's mess to clean up because he was the village cleaner upper. It was clear to us that she was lying about something. Valdrok continued to converse with her and eventually we settled on returning to Biff's hobbit hole that we had taken residence in to hear the whole story.

The story began with a group of rebellious hobbit youths that had an adventurous streak. The group departed their home in the South and ended up settling here in Dead Hobbit Run because of ruins nearby. Only the well and some foundations remained. Biff Bunnyfoot set down next to the old well and wished for plate of honeyed biscuits aloud. To everyone's surprise a plate of biscuits appeared. The prospect of a magic well convinced the hobbits to settle down. Legend has it the well spoke to them and made a deal that if the hobbits sacrificed pies to the well, the well would provide for the residents. The Mistress claimed the well regularly granted wishes for meats, cheeses, and other foodstuffs. The wished for items would magically appear immediately after the wish was made. Apparently Biff thought the well was able to provide much more and he wished for 2 plates of honeyed biscuits. His wish was not granted, and apparently the moss cover appeared a week after his wish. Since his wish nothing has been granted at the well.

Apparently Bonnie Bloomers has baked over 40 apple pies in an effort to appease the well. According to The Mistress it was the mayor that demanded that Biff go down and remove the cover in the well, and that was when he fell in. During his attempt he was "tied off" for safety, but the mayor was yelling and the rope was released and Biff fell through. A few nights after Biff fell, his nephew, Teddy, ventured to the stream for water and never returned.

I managed to gather that Biff was the town carpenter, and that Teddy was a laborer. The mess in his hobbit hole was due to the villagers themselves. They had ransacked the place looting anything of use to themselves after they had given him up for dead. She also revealed that she had used magic to make apple trees grow overnight so they would have apples for the well. Bruno managed to cajole a meal for us out of her, and she made good by delivering a large pot of stew. It was passable, but over salted. Afterwards I found a spot for a long rest. I'm tired from the last few days.

The following morning I took advantage of the rest to study my books and prepare for the day. I opted to deliver the Duke's letter to the Mayor. While I was there it occurred to me that the Mayor would be a good test for one of my new spells. I waited with the well in view away from the village inhabitants for the mayor to appear. I cast a Charm Spell and then approached the mayor. He greeted me as old friend. It was time to get some real information! I quickly diffused a situation between the mayor and Bruno and then we retired to Danderduf's burrow for a beverage and a conversation.

I asked him about all the anxiety in town and asked if there was anything I could do for my old friend. He confirmed most of the story told to us by Pansy "Mistress of Shrubbery." He did tell Biff to clear the covering, and it was his fault that his rope was dropped because he had been yelling at the two hobbits belaying Biff. He's been encouraging Pansy to help with the well. Apparently Pansy's powers are new, only having manifest 3 or 4 months ago. He said he believes she was a druid because she had made the Apple trees grow overnight, when I asked if he was sure she was responsible he seemed convinced, but when I followed up asking if she had done anything else like that since he said no. I could see the doubt forming regarding Pansy's powers.

As we were leaving DeeDee, the mayors daughter, showed me a drawing of a creature that looked rather lizard like. I asked her several questions and found out it's name was Puck, that she was the only one who saw him, and that no one believed her when she talked about him. Interestingly she said the reason he was her friend is because she wouldn't tell. That makes me wonder what she's not telling if she's telling me he exists. According to DeeDee, Puck, is 3 feet long, has leathery and jagged wings, claws, and sparkles like a geode, and he thinks the hobbits are funny. Clearly this creature is intelligent, and has the ability to create food, but isn't very large and is likely aquatic in nature. Combined with the fact that the Mayor says they've never had to deal with any monsters or threats indicates it has been protecting these hobbits. Apparently it enjoys they're entertainment.

Perhaps this creature does in fact live in the well and it is responsible for the mossy seal. As to why DeeDee hasn't seen it since Biff fell in the well indicates that it is upset or injured. We decided to take a look at the ruins outside of town. While there Bruno discovered an engraving on the stone that read the Adventurers Repose. Valdrok inspected the stonework and managed to find a lot of child sized hobbit tracks leading to a tree behind the ruins. Pardue noticed a moss like patch cover similar to the well inside the hollowed out tree.

We removed the hatch and discovered an ungodly stench. Pardue was also immediately taken over by a sense of dread, and the smell even reminded me of evil! For now I think we need to retreat to the burrow and plan. It seems odd that I haven't seen any children other than DeeDee. There is more going on here than even the Mayor has told me so far.

Valdrok decided to take a quick look inside the entrance before we left and found some black hair. We replaced the patch and retreated from the area. I think I may need to use the seeing spell I got from Meers on DeeDee, and encourage her to go look for Puck. I think I also need to ask the Mayor about the lack of children.
