5.
Most of my brothers and cousins are knights. As a lad, I imagined serving my House, protecting its holdings, and ensuring the well-being of the peasants who toiled on our behalf. I imagined jousting at tournaments, accruing renown, and winning the favor of Ladies of the Court. I imagined following my elders in whose wise judgement fealty was given and in turn rewarded with honor and love. The dreams of youth!
Through the generations, a few in the family line, always those who stood to inherit nothing, turned to religion and became warrior-priests who smashed whatever folk were named by those in authority as heretics and heathens. I stand to inherit nothing. Had the gods seen fit to grant me strength of frame, I would have followed my brothers along the knightly path. Noble service rendered with aid given to those deserving seems a life better spent than “defending the faith” against unseen, quite possibly imaginary, powers and principalities.
I am no knight. But I can still judge when others are in need and render aid when possible. The mistreatment inflicted upon Eva could not be reversed but her outward appearance was restored easily enough. A wave of my hand over her torn garments was sufficient to mend and smooth the cloth as another hand might smooth disturbed sand upon a beach. Eva stared in awe at the restored clothing. I shared with her some of my own food and drink as reassurance of her safety. It felt like the right and honorable thing to do.
