As a music artist, Lionel Richie was definitely an icon of the 70s and 80s; this song was the last #1 while performing with the Commodores, before heading into his solo career. Kenny Rogers, like Dolly Parton, has always been and will always be an icon in country music. I can remember listening to many of his songs while riding with my dad on road trips.
This is definitely one of the best performances with two amazing artists from an era we'll likely never see again. I had read that the song Still, was written about a couple who saved their friendship through divorce.

I woke up crazy early this morning and this song (among many other things) was playing in my head. I figured "must be a sign" and decided to make it my Song du Jour.
Protests in New York
Listen to the call of the wild
Brother, sisters carrying signs
Breathe deep before it's too late
The sky is falling, burning your eyes
Down in New Orleans, rivers boiling
Nothing living, nothing to eat
Thank the Lord, daddy's working eight to five
Paying the doctor, baby's got cancer
(Give and take)
Has all we've learned been wrong?
(Look around)
At what we've been given
Maybe we've taken too long
"Resistance!"
Shouts the man on the right
Can't solve the problem overnight
(Resistance)
listen to the call of the wild
Burning coal, got to keep the company warm
As the rain keeps killing the trees
Cut 'em down quick, pay the man his wages
He's making paper, the fuel for the information age
Out in the Midwest
Hear the roar of the plow, turning grassland into sand
Got to feed the people more every day
But the wind keeps blowing the land away
(Give and take)
Has all we've learned been wrong?
(Look around)
At what we've been given
Maybe we've taken too long
"Resistance!"
Shouts the man on the right
Can't solve the problem overnight
(Resistance)
liberal opposition crying violation
Stop the madness
(Resistance)
Through the din, one voice we should hear
(Resistance)
listen to the call of the wild
There's no easy solution
The price is high, and it's time to pay
Turn of the century vision
Focused on a better way
"Resistance!"
Shouts the man on the right
Can't solve the problem overnight
(Resistance)
liberal opposition crying violation
Stop the madness
through the din, one voice we should hear
(Resistance)

Yeah, world gone crazy.
It's pretty insightful to look back on songs of the past, to realize how many current events or how much real world inspiration went into them. Reminds me of Billy Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire".
We didn't start the fire,
It was always burning since the world's been turning,
We didn't start the fire,
No, we didn't light it,
But we tried to fight it.

Another from the 80s, one that I've always enjoyed.

Another 80s tune... from OZZY! This one is from his 1986 album, The Ultimate Sin, which has the best cover art he ever released. The cut is just as meaningful in 2024 as it was in 1986: Thank God for the Bomb
Like moths to a flame
Is man ever gonna change?
Time's seen untold aggression
And infliction of pain
If that's the only thing that's stopping war
Then thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Nuke ya, nuke ya
War is just another game
Tailor made for the insane
But make a threat of their annihilation
And nobody wants to play
If that's the only thing that keeps the peace
Then thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Nuke ya, nuke ya
Today was tomorrow yesterday
It's funny how time can slip away
The face of the doomsday clock
Has launched a thousand wars
As we near the final hour
Time is the only foe we have
When war is obsolete
I'll thank God for war's defeat
But any talk about hell freezing over
Is all spoke with tongue in cheek
Until the day the war drums beat no more
I'll thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Thank God for the bomb
Nuke ya, nuke ya
Like moths to a flame
Is man ever gonna change?
Time's seen untold aggression
And infliction of pain

Not a song, but a video that popped up on my YT recommendations. Interesting subject, one that I would say I agree with. However, I have to say, I think the premise applies to more outlets than just music.
Personally I find a lot of outlets (music, television, film, art, etc.) to be worse than earlier decades.

Music is art.
Art requires imagination.
Imagination is expressed through talent. For example - I can imagine a wilderness location wherein a lost civilization can be found. I could write about the scene to express what I'm seeing as I've worked on that ability. However, I can't make a quality painting of it because I don't have the talent / skill to paint it.
I've not been impressed with the rock music scene for 20+ years. Longer than that if alternative and grunge are taken into consideration. The previous video explains it well. A lot of less-than skilled / talented folks aren't taking the time to learn their craft and hone their skills but rely on techie toy shortcuts to mass produce unappealing "product" for "consumption" (for fuck's sake I hate those terms) by the public. They may be stringing notes together but there is no art in what they're doing. It is not good music. I know there is quality music available but that requires searching through mountains of mediocrity. I don't have time for that.

Agreed on all accounts.
