Just read that Ida made landfall as a Cat 4. What a mess that promises to be! Don't forget your galoshes (aka "rubbers"
) when you go.

No galoshes, but we will be taking steel-toed boots, pretty much a requisite for all team members. I'm not looking forward to the trip, at all. It's going to be an 8 hour road trip; that's assuming we don't have any traffic delays and are able to drive straight there, but I'm betting on road closures and such on the way, gas shortages, etc. Then there is the matter of power, I saw that almost 400k residence in La. are already without power, not sure if the base will have any generators running to keep the lights (and AC) on, but I'm doubting it, so it may be hot, muggy, no AC, probably eating MREs (

Oh well, it's part of the job, I guess. At least I'll be banking plenty of comp time and extra pay.

Doubt we'll have any rooms at the NGIS there on base, but maybe I'm wrong. Probably no water for showers (will have to use baby wipes or something similar), just not going to be a fun trip, this go round...for 2 weeks...

With a Cat 4, it's likely some of the coastal roads are washed out while some further inland may be underwater for a bit.
WRT to power on base, if leadership has ANY brain cells to them, everything will have a backup generator in place with fuel stockpiled to keep things going for 2+ weeks. This isn't the first major hurricane to hit the region. A failure to plan accordingly would be beyond incompetent for base leadership.
As for LA itself, hot, muggy, no AC are 3 very good reasons to never live there. Add in regular hurricanes and everything that goes with it... never.

We didn't hear anything today about an official call for support, we should know at 0800 tomorrow morning during our brief. Hoping we don't end up going, but with a CAT4 hitting that area, it seems far-fetched to think we wouldn't go. But here's to hoping; I'd really prefer not to spend my holiday weekend there if it can be helped.

Well, looks like we dodged the bullet for deployment to Louisiana. The base took damage, but it was all minor enough that they didn't need a full CERT for support. We are technically on standby through today but I doubt at this point they would request anyone else.

So yeah remember my crack about micro nuclear reactors?

Looks like the military is finally on board. 40 MW of power, or 8 of these, would have been enough to greatly alleviate the power problems we had here in TX back in February.

Heck yeah, seems like a pretty cool thing. Lets just hope it gets used for the betterment of societies everywhere, instead of corporate greed to just make a buck and line wallets.Captain_Blood wrote: ↑September 27th, 2021, 2:20 pm So yeah remember my crack about micro nuclear reactors?
