It's been a while since anything on KS has caught my eye, but I saw this and grabbed a pledge.

A New Roleplaying Game of Gothic Horror from the makers of ALIEN, Forbidden Lands and Tales from the Loop.

In dark forests, beyond the mountains, by black lakes in hidden groves. At your doorstep. In the shadows, something stirs. Strange beings. Twisted creatures, lurking at the edge of vision. Watching. Waiting. Unseen by most, but not by you. You see them for what they really are. Vaesen.

Welcome to the Mythic North – northern Europe of the nineteenth century, but not as we know it today. A land where the myths are real. A cold reach covered by vast forests, its few cities lonely beacons of industry and enlightenment – a new civilization dawning. But in the countryside, the old ways still hold sway. There, people know what lurks in the dark.

They know to fear it.

The dark forests, deep lakes and vast mountain ranges of Scandinavia are home to a multitude of supernatural beings. They are known as the little people, the invisibles, or simply the fair folk. When someone vanishes in the woods, when the milk curdles over night, when strange noises are heard in the loft or when an unexplained ailment strikes, it is said to be the work of such entities.

Some of these creatures appear all over Europe: ghosts, giants, dragons, trolls, werewolves and faeries. Others are endemic to Scandinavia, such as the Neck who rules the rivers, the Huldra who guards the forest, tomtar, mylings and many others.

You and your companions in the Society were born different. You have the Sight - the ability to see what ordinary people cannot. You know that vaesen have lived beside humanity for untold centuries, in an uneasy peace. Not anymore. Rumors spread of kittens born with two heads, streams red from blood, groves lulling children into eternal sleep, fairies dancing through villages, luring the young into the woods to be forever enthralled.

Embarking on journeys to remote villages in the wilderness, you will uncover the secrets of the Mythic North. Armed with nothing but your courage, conviction, and ability to see the supernatural, you will face the creatures of the forest. Neither bullets nor blades can stop them. To drive them off, you must understand them. Find their weakness.

Yet even if you prevail, facing the vaesen will leave you with scars that never heal.

That could make for a very interesting addition to the events at a PfCon...

That looks really interesting! Pretty much any kickstarter is beyond my spending money of [looksdowncounting]zero dollars[/looksup] but Tales from the Loop I've been hearing a LOT about lately. Their popularity is on the rise huh? It's more a "story" game or something, right? Inspired by Stranger Things??
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now!

Tales from the Loop and it's sequel, Things from the Flood, are actually inspired by the artwork from scifi artist Simon Stålenhag, although I think it's production was enhanced by the introduction of Stranger Things since the game kickstarted a short time after the series premiered.

Here is a description of his work:
Swedish 1980s suburbia, populated by fantastic machines and strange beasts, have spread like wildfire on the Internet. Stålenhag’s portrayal of a childhood against a backdrop of old Volvo cars and coveralls, combined with strange and mystical machines, creates a unique atmosphere that is both instantly recognizable and utterly alien.
I'm not sure if I would actually classify it as a "story game" the way some other RPGs would be, but compared to say, AD&D, yes it has more of a thematic feel to it than just dungeon crawling; I would consider it to be more in the vein of Call of Cthulhu in its play and style. The system is relatively simple for task resolution, roll a number of d6s equal to attribute plus skill rank, get at least one 6 to succeed.

Received my printed bundle from the Kickstarter, last year. The quality of products that Free League put out are top notch, it's so hard to convey just how well made their books are. On top of quality products, the games themselves really are fantastic, I've grown to be quite a fan in the recent years.

I'm looking forward to getting my rewards from this expansion. Adding on Mythic Britain & Ireland was a great step, I hope they plan to move to some other locations for future products.

Finally received the expansion books for Vaesen from the kickstarter. As Anc says, quality is off the charts, excellent for sure. This is the game I'd like to run the next time I want to do a horror themed system, as opposed to Call of Cthulhu.
