I started this thread for folks to post about gaming related conventions that don't get as much publicity as GenCon, GaryCon, Origins, DragonCon, NTRPG, etc. It certainly can't hurt to have options, right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_g ... onventions
The list in the link is by no means exhaustive. For example, it doesn't even include NTRPG.
Feel free to add more convention info as you happen upon it.

Gen Con released its 2022 event schedule: https://www.gencon.com/events?c=indy2022
I took a quick peek and found some HackMaster, Harnmaster, WFRP, CoC, DCC, HARP, Rolemaster, one Talislanta , along with some 4ron, TETSNBN, a little AD&D, White Box, and even Midnight lumped under D&D, and plenty of 5nowflake... but NO Ars Magica, C&C, MERP, Metal, Magic & Lore (MML) or Mythras.

The events list for Origins should be available sometime this week, or next. I noticed they opened up hotels via an Origins reservation link, did some playing around with dates and such to get an idea of room costs for attending. Arriving on Tue the 7th and leaving on Sunday 12th, runs about $900-1000 for a room, staying til Monday would push it to over $1000 for the stay. A much higher cost than attending GaryCon, for sure, room to room comparison, but when you tack on the cost of a car rental for GC, to drive in from the airport, then I imagine the overall costs are probably about the same.
Food and such is going to be about the same either way.
Badges, $95 for all events at Origins; $90 for a Silver at GC and $195 for a Gold...seems like the cost of attending GC has increased considerably. I mean, hell, almost $200 for a Gold badge now used to be $130 and Silvers used to be $65.
I'm really starting to wonder whether or not gaming conventions are even worth the price and hassle of attending anymore. I've had my fair share of fun, no doubt, but hell, with rising costs and fighting crowds for rooms and events, idk anymore.

IIRC it opens on 9-May. I'll be in HI not even concerned at that time!

Damn - that's a bit more than I recall it being 10 years ago!Necron 99 wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2022, 4:21 pm I noticed they opened up hotels via an Origins reservation link, did some playing around with dates and such to get an idea of room costs for attending. A $95 badge for 5 days at Origins v a $195 Gold badge at GC is a better deal, IMO. But the advantage of early event selection for the gold badge is a perk. And yeah... GC is getting pricey all things considered. Just a few years ago the gold badge was $160.Necron 99 wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2022, 4:21 pmFood and such is going to be about the same either way.

If it gets to be too much a PITA, maybe we try to put something together with friends and select members of other boards we've associated and gamed with over the years who have interest. Folks can split the cost of VRBO house and have much better set up than a hotel room. Plenty of time to ponder that...

I received another GenCon email today. Not sure why I keep getting them since my last year attending was 2014.Ancalagon wrote: ↑May 2nd, 2022, 11:26 pm Gen Con released its 2022 event schedule: https://www.gencon.com/events?c=indy2022

Anyhoo, here is the nugget of interest:
"Gen Con Indy 2022 will implement mandatory mask-wearing in all Gen Con-controlled spaces. To participate in Gen Con Indy this year you’ll also need to bring your proof of vaccination and government-issued ID to one of our vaccination check stations prior to entering any Gen Con space."
With the enormous number of folks that attend GenCon, I'm pretty sure this will end up like GaryCon with no enforcement.

Maybe so, but if they're going through the motions of still holding requirements and such, I feel like they'll be policing it fairly hard. Either way, I'm not attending nor plan to ever attend that convention. If that's what the hosts and attendees enjoy for their entertainment then I guess that's their business.
Having had the coof roughly 3 times now with no major repercussions, I'm more than willing to attend a convention that isn't still maintaining requirements while accepting the risks.

For S&Gs I looked up the number of events offered at GenCon for some specific systems.Ancalagon wrote: ↑May 2nd, 2022, 11:26 pm Gen Con released its 2022 event schedule: https://www.gencon.com/events?c=indy2022

Not terrible for older systems, but at a convention like GenCon, those numbers are a drop in the bucket compared to the latest editions of D&D and PF.
Taking a look, I also see the following games offered:
The One Ring 8
Alien 8
CoC 170
DCC 91
D&D 5e 1046
Earthdawn 12
Pendragon 4
Pathfinder 228
Savage Worlds 37
Shadowrun 121

Yeah... pretty much reinforces that Gary Con and NTXRPG are the places to go to find AD&D, B/X, Original D&D.Necron 99 wrote: ↑July 9th, 2022, 9:21 am Not terrible for older systems, but at a convention like GenCon, those numbers are a drop in the bucket compared to the latest editions of D&D and PF.

Out of curiosity, being a former loooooong time attendee of DragonCon, I took a peek at its RPG (non campaign) offerings. This is some pretty sad feces. For a con that boasts well over 100K in attendance, there were less than 80 games on the schedule. Mostly 5e, of course. No (A)D&D, Ars Magica, C&C, DCC, GURPS, HackMaster, HarnMaster, MERP, Mythras, WFRP, etc., etc., etc.
From a gamer's perspective, its sad to see how far a con that was based on gaming and comics has fallen by morphing into playing dress up as its primary focus. *Le Sigh*
