Made the decision to pursue a bucket list item. I'm not getting any younger and I don't want to look back and find disappointment in that I didn't reach out for some of the things I've wanted to do.

I registered to take a motorcycle training and safety course, down in Jacksonville in late August. I would have taken one sooner, but that weekend fell on my anniversary so, couldn't do that, I pushed it back to the next weekend. Anyhow, I'm pretty stoked to do this and have been looking at a variety of bikes, trying to find one to settle on after I get my license.

I've never been impressed with or had the want to ride a crotch rocket, like fast cars, they've never been my thing. I don't plan on making trips more than an hour or two, so I don't need a big, pimped out cruiser either. I've always liked the style of older cruisers and street bikes. Yamaha, Honda, and Harley all have some great lower end, beginner and moderate bikes. However, even after looking at all of the ones in line for those manufacturers, I found one that actually hits everything I want in MY personal style for a motorcycle.

This is the Royal Enfield Classic 350. It is a modern, redesigned motorcycle, based on the classic British bike used during WWII. I absolutely love it. I've read several reviews which have been consistently favorable, and watched a few videos on YT. Below is a good review of the bike, and they come in a wide range of colors and looks. The one I want won't have the windshield or the rear seat, it'll be like the one in the image above.

PLEASE be hyper vigilant for other drivers! Many drivers don't easily see smaller vehicles like scooters and can prove dangerous to riders. My dad rode a Harley for years so I always keep an eye out for riders, give them plenty of room, and have even used my truck to shield them from other drivers who may have, IMO, driving a wee inattentively while closing in on a bike rider.

With that being said, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 is a nice looking bike! What color(s) do you have in mind?

Not entirely sure, I need to see them in person, preferably in sunlight to make a sure decision, but so far the two that stand out the most are the dark, gunmetal grey (top), and if I go chrome, the chrome bronze (bottom). Leaning towards the dark, gunmetal grey.

Three random thoughts about motorcycling:

1. My godfather (who, with my father, got me into SF and Fantasy) used to ride motorcylces, and I've always had a soft spot for them. (I was apparently supposed to inherit it when he died when I was 15, but it was sold by his family, since I was really too young to use/ride it).

2. Neil Peart also wrote several books about motorcycling (including one about cycling across Africa!), which I've not read none of yet. One will eventually come up on my "wishlist lottery" for a birthday or father's day gift from Heather and the boys, I'm sure ;)

3. One of my co-workers from Juniper (BITD when we lived in San Jose, CA) used to commute into Silicon Valley from north up in the east bay. If he had to drive his truck to work, it would take 2 hours one-way. Riding his motorcycle---because lane splitting is (or at least was) legal in CA---would cut that trip down to 70 minutes, so he rode his motorcycle into work every day.

Good luck with the bike, Jay!

Allan.

Thanks Allan!

I've seen folks do the split lane thing a time or two here in FL, though I don't know if it's legal. Personally, I would never consider doing it, even if legal. My biggest concern with riding is getting effed up by an actual driver. Florida isn't known for good drivers, hence why my damn car insurance went up when we moved down here. Was not happy about that at all.

I'm not worried so much about what I can see in front and immediately around me, I'm usually pretty defensive in driving and don't get distracted, it's what's behind me that I can't see that will be my biggest concern. I almost talked myself out of going through with all of this because as I was doing research, I found out that FL is one of or is THE state with the highest number of motorcycle accidents/fatalities per year. And while a number of them are due to bad motorcyclists (not wearing proper gear, speeding, etc.), the rest are due to distracted drivers not paying attention or driving aggressively. A few videos I caught online showed some riders getting rear ended by cars, flying off the bikes, and what not. Pretty frightening.

Hopefully here in my county, which is a bit more removed from the traffic of the Jacksonville metropolis, I won't have to worry about any of that.

For the record lane splitting is NOT legal in Florida, and it exponentially increases your chances of having a serious accident. Do NOT do it, please. I'm glad to see you decided to take the riding safety course. It will teach you a lot.

I've been riding for years, though I just recently decided to put my bike up for sale because I'm just not riding it anymore. Since you don't want a cruiser I won't try to pawn it off on you :D. Regardless, if we're ever near each other with access to a couple of motorcycles I'd love to do a ride. That gun metal grey bike looks fantastic in the photos. Have fun and ride safe!

That's awesome, yeah man. If ever given the opportunity to ride together we definitely should. So far, I've settled on the Gun Metal edition of the bike, there's a shop down near Daytona that says it has one in stock. Once I get through the rider safety course, I'll head down there and take a look.

I watched this video yesterday, a lot of the review videos are from folks over in the UK. I would LOVE to be able to ride one of these bikes through the country side in the UK. The scenery and weather there just looks amazing compared to here in N. Florida.

I'm taking the online portion of my safety course on Friday, doing the riding portion of the course on Sat and Sun this weekend. Today I went by the dealership down in JAX and took a look at the bikes they had in stock. I was pretty stoked to see the bikes in person and talking with dealer and his experience riding the RE itself, along with the number of bikes sold over the last year, I knew this was the one I wanted.

After looking over the different color schemes in the showroom, I settled on this one, which doesn't happen to be either of the two I thought I wanted intally. I picked out the special edition British World War II Signals Marsh Grey. At first I wasn't planning to get the extended seat, but Emmi asked if she could ride with me when she gets another year or two older and I'd have to get one eventually. It just doesn't get much more retro than the look of this bike, imo. I put down a deposit to hold this one until after my course is done this weekend, going back next week while I'm in the office to finish the paperwork and finances, planning to pick it up and ride it home next Saturday.

Two days in the MSF course and a perfect score on my riding exam, I'm officially endorsed to ride motorcycles.
