Last night, we had Sam's impromptu Christmas Special, a Warhammer 2nd edition adventure with some cool fights, although I think most of us were taken out of the final boss encounter with that fear effect. Thankfully James' trollslayer, Mordin, was able to hold fast and put down the big bad, saving the town and it's remaining folks from the plague of marauding beastmen.
After the game was over and we were chatting, there was a comment thrown out about running Warhammer, then later a comment that James made about wanting to master the Mythras RPG. Funny enough that both of these comments were brought up, because it fell right in line with something I was going over in my head, just a week ago. I was out for a walk, enjoying a nice brisk morning and thinking about the coming year and any New Year resolutions to make, when it popped into my head that I wanted to give focus to specific areas next year which I tentatively call the 2023H New Year Resolutions.
Why 3H? Because I thought it would be good to focus on the three areas of Health, Home, and Hobbies.
Health isn't so much a "new" resolution, I've been working towards getting stronger and healthier since late summer. This is is just more of the same, focusing on keeping the health and well being going and making improvements throughout the entire upcoming year, setting new goals, etc.
For Home, there are several home projects I would like to start and finish. There's some yard landscaping that needs to be done, planting some new shrubs and flowers in the beds, clearing weeds from the lawn and promoting the grass to grow, I want to plant a new tree in the yard too. Then there is some painting and interior decorating that would improve the aesthetics, plus some minor repairs to bathrooms and such, just general maintenance that's been neglected for a year or so. And maybe I'll even work on building an island for our kitchen that I've been thinking about since completing my arcade cabinet project. Just a mixed bag of things that I've considered over the last few years, but never pushed to really get done until now.
As for Hobbies, that's where the Warhammer and Mythras comments from last night's conversation comes in. There are a couple of things that I would like to pursue on the gaming side of my life. For one, I'm really going to try and do some sort of local gaming, see if I can get an in-person group together, even if it's intermittent. There is an active community in the area and I've only played in one in-person session since 2015, which was D&D 5e and not that great. With 2023, I'm going to see if I can throw something together and get some GMing time on the books. In addition to trying to find a local group, I'm also considering less of a focus on d20-Fantasy games (C&C and DCC), which is where Warhammer comes in. I have several games that aren't D&D or a D&D derivative, such as Warhammer 4e, The One Ring 2e, Talisanta, Shiver, Lex Arcana, Vaesen, Wyrm, etc. and I think it's about time they had some extra attention given to them. Warhammer is one that I enjoy reading through and have been wanting to run for some time, this coming year may be the perfect time to make that happen.
So my plan for table-top RPGs in 2023, is to push these games to forefront and focus on running and/or playing these games, whether it's in person or online with out current group. C&C, DCC, D&D, etc, these will always be there if I really want to use them, but I think a break from the bog-standard d20 system is in order. This is also where the comment James made about wanting to master Mythras comes up, I think a resolution for 2023 to master that system would be a GREAT idea. Just as I want to do with the other games I own, I'd love to sit down and play in a Mythras game, even if it's only for a single session or short series of adventures. This isn't to say I'd drop out of Sam's C&C game or anything, but I would like to get more game time in for some other systems.
So yeah, as of now, this is my plan for the upcoming year.

Very nice, Jay! While I'm not a NY resolutions kind of guy, I applaud the intentionality and focus of your 3H resolutions.
While I've really enjoyed playing and DMing AD&D actively the past 10-15 years, I've also enjoyed played in a monthly ongoing Delta Green campaign since the fall of 2020. Most of the stuff hasn't been pure Mythos monsters thus far, but it's still been quite fun.
There are so many other games I'd like to try sometime too: Coriolis; Dune; Tales from the Loop; the new editions of Blue Planet, Aliens, Top Secret, and Kult; some CoC-like/-inspired indy games like The Dee Sanction; as well as the usual gamut of fantasy campaigns, including one I'd forgotten about until recently---a Primal Order-based game where the PCs are all newly-ascended quasi-deities, hero deities, and/or demi-gods. Masks of Nyarlathotep is still on my To Do List too (along with painting more miniatures....).
It used to be that I'd play and experiment more at convention games, which would let me try out these newer systems, but playing time at conventions is much-shorter while we're working the Black Blade booth.
Allan.

Very cool on the Delta Green game. As much CoC as I've played, DG is one branch I've never tried out. I actually have the PDF for Coriolis, it's one of the Free League sci-fi games that I read through a couple months back, it sounds really neat and I've been tempted to get a hardback copy. That's another one I wouldn't mind learning and trying my hand at running. I like the theme of "Tales of the Arabian Nights in space" that they have going on, the middle-eastern background is a nice departure from usual stuff we see. I also toyed with the idea of getting Alien at one point, but I know it's somewhat limited in scope, which is one of the few complaints I've heard from players. For one shots and short campaigns it does well, but long term, just isn't there. Haven't heard of the indie games you mentioned (Dee Sanction, Primal Order), I'll have to check them out.grodog wrote: ↑December 20th, 2022, 3:53 pm Very nice, Jay! Allan.
Hopefully you'll catch a break at one of the many cons and get a chance to play something outside of AD&D, time permitting.

Good idea.
For Health - I intend to continue watching my weight and drop some more, mainly by eating right - no (or minimal) junk / garbage food "products". I'm thinking I'd like to get down to 185 by April in time for one of the softball leagues to start up. Last April I was at 192 and could run like the wind again. No BS - I was fast. Maybe at 185 I can outrun the wind... I also intend to start with some light exercising like leg lifts, push ups, sit ups and light weights just to keep muscles limber and tone - no bulking up! Last time I tried adding muscle it messed with my flexibility.
For Home - I really need to donate / dispose of stuff I've held onto for no real good reason so as to clear out some space.
For Hobbies - Now that the Frozen Hell of Nebraska is here (aka winter), I intend to rewrite / edit / expand at least one of my convention gaming one-shots into a full-length module for publication purposes. Folks have been signing up for my games at conventions for 20 years so I figure I'm doing something right. Time to take the next logical step. I'll hit GaryCon in March and will run a C&C game I call Into the Mines of Moria. In the Spring, I'll jump back into multiple softball leagues again starting in April and adding 1-2 more by June. And who knows?... Maybe I'll put some time towards becoming proficient with Mythras... it really is cool.

It simple for me this year. I want to avoid the health shit show that ran my life this year. Spend 6 months in Europe; as it's time Martina got to live in a place she's much more comfortable for a while. Finally, I want to culminate my C&C game.
We actually started this campaign in Kleaves over two years ago after spending some time in Inklu Naid. It's been a blast running it, even with one TPK, but the current team is nearing the mid point of what I have laid out. Don't die this time guys! Because, if we TPK again I'm gonna have to put this one on the shelf for a while.
