Sounds like a prime location for a Cthulhu based adventure.

That could be epic. I might need to do a little research. It could be adapted for a fantastic dark fantasy adventure where the Pope equivalent is a Lich. I feel it could also fit into Warhammer Fantasy pretty easily.
