This video was thrown into my recommended stream on Youtube, and even though the guy is referring to his 5E campaign, the system he talks about using can very much be implemented into any d20 system, like C&C or AD&D.
The first 4 or so minutes are context and lead up to his new spell system, which he starts to describe just at or before the 4 minute mark. Essentially, he's pulling in the DCC system, where characters roll a d20 to see whether or not the spell succeeds or fails, and just like combat rolls, has the opportunity for critical hits and fumbles. I also like the idea he mentions for casting spells based on "blood" payment (hit points).

For magicians, my house rules for C&C use mana points, and a d20 roll for casting. If the roll is a botch / misfire the something BAD happens. Roll high enough and no mana is used to cast the spell if the magician is using a focus devise (wand).
